Tethys Oil started drilling its Skomantai-1 well on the Gargzdai license onshore Lithuania. The primary target of this exploration well is a previously undrilled oil prospect near producing fields.
The Skomantai-1 well is planned to be drilled to a total measured depth of 2,381 m (7,811 ft), and a true vertical depth of 2,042 m (6,699 ft). The well will target potential oil in Cambrian sandstones, which is the same as in all the producing oil fields on the license.
The well will also investigate potential for unconventional hydrocarbons in the Silurian source rock shales, above the Cambrian sandstones. The drill site is 2 km north of the Pociai field in western Lithuania.
Drilling operations are expected to last for two months.
The Gargzdai license is owned by Lithuanian company UAB Minijos Nafta. Tethys Oil has a 25% indirect interest in the license through an agreement with Odin Energi A/S.
