Weatherford International Ltd. and Petrowell Ltd. have entered an exclusive, worldwide manufacturing and distribution arrangement aimed at bringing emerging reservoir completion technology to the market place.

Under the agreement, Petrowell and Weatherford will develop innovative completion tools and systems that Weatherford will then manufacture, sell and service. Core to the agreement is a shared belief in the value of reliable openhole completion practices, and the potential for radio frequency identification (RFID) to radically improve completion installation operations.

UK-based Petrowell was founded in 2001, providing primarily rapid response engineering and manufacturing services to the oil and gas industry. Since 2003, the company has specialized in the design, engineering, manufacturing and testing of some of the industry’s most innovative and reliable oil and gas completion tools.

For example, Petrowell recently developed an open-hole packer capable of withstanding over 1,000 pressure reversals of up to 3,000 psi in holes of up to 11-in. diameter.

The company has a clear focus on designing equipment that incorporates emerging technology. To this end, Petrowell is the holder of an exclusive license from In-Depth Systems, Inc. under patents held by Marathon Oil Co. for processes, systems and equipment using RFID transported in a well during completion applications.

Petrowell designed, built and deployed the world's first truly remotely operated electric in-well flow control system in 2006.

Weatherford’s completion offering includes zonal isolation capabilities, safety valves, flow controls, packer systems, and market-leading expandable reservoir completion technology, as part of a full suite of premium and conventional completion products. Weatherford is one of the largest global providers of innovative mechanical solutions, technology and services for the drilling and production sectors of the oil and gas industry. The company operates in over 100 countries and employs approximately 40,500 people worldwide.
