The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) announced the results of its 2015 to 2016 board of directors election on Aug. 5. Bill Abriel will be president-elect for 2015 to 2016, and after that, will become SEG’s president after the 2016 annual meeting in October.

Abriel retired from Chevron Corp. (CVX) in May after 36 years. He focused on North America, China, Australia, South America, Russia, and Eurasia.

Abriel was a member of the editorial board of The Leading Edge, and an associate editor of Geophysics. Currently he is an associate editor of Interpretation.

In 2004, he was SEG’s Spring distinguished lecturer, and in 2008 he was the distinguished instructor.

He is a founding board member and board chair of the SEG Advanced Modeling Corporation research consortium. In 2007 he was made a life member of SEG and was first vice president in 2012.

Abriel has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in geophysics from Pennsylvania State University.

SEG also elected Jie Zhang as second vice president on the board of directors; Mauricio Sacchi as editor; Rocky Detomo and Vladimir Grechka as directors at large; and Lee Lawyer as council chair.

There will be eight incumbents from the current board. They are John Bradford, the current president-elect, who will become president; Eve Sprunt, the current second vice president, who will become first vice president; Christopher Liner, the current president, who will become past president; and Alison Small, who will be treasurer for a second year. Guillaume Cambois, Gustavo Carstens, Xianhuai Zhu and Maurice Nessim will be on the board, returning as directors at large.

The new board will begin leadership after the annual meeting in New Orleans this October, the society said.
