Cairn together with its joint venture partners has discovered oil offshore Senegal with the FAN-1 exploration well, Cairn said in a news release.

The well, located in 1,427 m (4,682 ft) water depth and about 100 km (62 miles) offshore in the Sangomar Deep Block, has reached a target depth of 4,927 m (16,165 ft) and was targeting multiple stacked deepwater fans.

Preliminary analysis indicates 29 m (95 ft) of net oil-bearing reservoir in Cretaceous sandstones.

There are no plans for immediate well testing. Further evaluation will now be required to calibrate the well with the existing 3-D seismic to determine future plans and follow-up locations to determine the extent of the discovered resource.

The FAN-1 well is the third well in Cairn’s northwest Africa program and the first in Senegal.

Cairn has a 40% working interest in three blocks offshore Senegal; ConocoPhillips has 35% working interest; FAR Ltd. has 15%; and Petrosen, the Senegal national oil company, has 10% interest. The three blocks cover 7,490 sq km (2,892 sq miles).
