U.K.-based Faroe Petroleum began drilling the Kvalross exploration well 7224/2-1, the company said Jan. 12. The well is in the Norwegian Barents Sea in the PL611 license, which contains the Kvalross project.

The well will test the Kvalross prospect, which has significant oil and gas resource potential within the lower Triassic Klappmyss Formation clinoform reservoir, and the Kvaltann prospect, which has additional oil potential within a mid-late Triassic Snadd Formation channel.

Faroe received the PL611 license in May 2011 during the Norwegian 21st licensing round. It has a 40% stake, and its partners are Wintershall Norge AS, which has 40% and is operator, and Petoro AS, which has a 20% stake.

The Transocean Arctic rig is drilling the well, which is south of OMV’s Wisting and Hanssen oil discoveries. Graham Stewart, CEO, said the same rig was used in 2015 on the Pil and Bue discoveries.
