Halliburton has announced the commercialization of its SmartWell Electro-Hydraulic Disconnect tool.

This new completions technology allows customers to disconnect and reconnect the upper completion while leaving the entire lower intelligent completion system, such as packers, interval control valves (ICV), and permanent downhole gauges, in place during workover or multi-trip operations, Halliburton said in a news release.

“Our unique disconnect technology addresses the industry's need to implement SmartWell intelligent completions in marginal assets where electric submersible pumps (ESP) or safety valves require periodic replacement, or during deployment of the lower assembly in an extended reach completion,” Jerry Wauters, vice president of Halliburton’s completion tools product service line, said in the release.

Halliburton successfully field tested the SmartWell Electro-Hydraulic Disconnect tool for Petrobras, the company said The disconnect tool was applied in a well that required installing an ESP in 101 m (330 ft) of water for a platform off the coast of Brazil. After deploying the new technology, the ESP pump was switched on and the well was allowed to flow. The well has since been producing with full functionality of the interval control valves and gauges.
