Shale gas explorer IGas Energy has signalled its plans to acquire new seismic data in the U.K. northwest region prior to possible further drilling and shale gas fracturing operations.
IGas is in the process of acquiring up to 100 sq km (37 sq miles) of 3-D seismic data before firming up several potential exploration and development sites before its next exploration well, the company said.
The data from the survey will be used to inform any future hydraulic fracture well design and help to minimize the environmental impact of its operations, IGas said in a stock exchange statement.
Acquisition of the data will confirm with guidelines laid out by the U.K. Onshore Operators’ Group, and with recommendations of the Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineers. Also, the company said the data program is subject to a consent process from the U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change before any shale gas hydraulic fracturing and flow testing can take place.
