Britain's government has unveiled plans to introduce new rules to simplify shale gas drilling.

Announcing plans for a consultation on proposals for governing underground access for shale gas and geothermal industries, Britain's Department of Energy and Climate Change says new proposals would simplify current procedures which are “costly, time-consuming and disproportionate for new methods of underground drilling.”

Companies operating in oil, gas and geothermal sectors would be allowed to explore underground in exchange for providing voluntary community payments for access to sites.

In a statement announcing the proposals, the DECC says the rules would only apply from a depth of 300 m (984 ft). Any hydraulic fracturing would only occur at far greater depths of 1.5 km (5,000 ft) or more. Proposals are out for consultation for 12 weeks, at the conclusion of which DECC says it will announce the way forward.
