Wood Group will use its standard well pad design for work at Suncor Energy’s Firebag in-situ site in Alberta, Canada, according to a news release.

The work, the first project under a recently signed multiuse agreement between the two companies, is expected to cut Suncor’s well pad facilities costs to about C$2 million per well pair from more than C$4 million to C$9 million per well pair, the release said.

“The design delivers cost savings by eliminating much of the owner’s costs associated with engineering, procurement and project management,” Wood Group said in the release. “The proven design accommodates pad sizes of up to 12 well pairs and uses a drilling pattern with the production and steam injection wells in two parallel rows, with wells drilled at 10-meter spacing.”

Design in response to rising costs for in-situ heavy oil facilities, including steam-assisted gravity drainage well pads, Wood Group said the design uses the same design-one, build-many approach the company has applied to other heavy oil and offshore facilities.
