BYK®-GO 8720 is an easy-to-use, heat-stable, liquid rheology modifier for oil and synthetic-based muds. BYK®-GO 8720 dramatically increases the Yield Point (YP) and 6-rpm without affecting PV values, demonstrates a high level of synergy with organoclays and is effective in systems up to 350° F.

The results of a study using BYK®-GO 8720 illustrate dramatic effectiveness in two different systems, both containing organoclay.

  • BYK®-GO 8720 doubled the LSRV with only 0.50 ppb and remained stable upon heat aging.
  • At equal loadings, BYK®-GO 8720 outperforms the standard fatty acid rheology modifier; in fact, BYK®-GO 8720 at 2ppb over-treated the test system.
  • After heat aging at 250° F, the fatty acid treated mud had similar 6-rpm readings to the base mud.
  • BYK®-GO 8720 improved the emulsion stability by oil wetting the drill solids.

Rheological profiles determined the effect of BYK®-GO 8720 on the base mud and performance in comparison to a widely used fatty acid rheology modifier. The 20 pounds per barrel (ppb) of OCMA Clay was included to simulate a minor amount of low gravity solids normally present during field operations.

Test results from the second system revealed that BYK®-GO 8720 fine-tuned a synthetic-based mud and reduced overall viscosity without losing any LSRV. To see these results, view the technical data sheet, request a complimentary sample or download the complete study, click here.
