Operational challenges have been overcome at the deepwater Kikeh field offshore Malaysia after a fire earlier this year, according to operator Murphy Oil, with work now continuing according to plan.
“We were set back in our Kikeh field development plans by a previously reported rig fire earlier this year and a single well operational delay. The operational challenges are now resolved and the well work continues,” Murphy reported in a second quarter project update.
Kikeh, in 1,330 m (4,336 ft) of water in Block K in the Sabah Delta region, first started producing in 2002 via an FPSO with 120,000 b/d of oil production capacity. Field enhancements are now underway with new production wells.
In January this year Murphy said Kikeh production would be impacted by the fire, which the operator said occurred on a contracted tender support rig moored to the field’s spar platform. At the time Murphy said the fire necessitated rig repair work, resulting in delays to drilling new wells as part of the development plan.
