Rowan Cos. Plc (NYSE: RDC) won a drillship contract in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) from Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM), the Houston company said June 7.

The contract with one of Rowan's R-Class drillship, the Rowan Relentless, was awarded to drill a GoM prospect and is set to commence in September. It is expected to last for 80 days, followed by four one-well, priced options.

Rowan is a global provider of contract drilling services with a fleet of 27 mobile offshore drilling units, composed of 23 self-elevating jackup rigs and four ultradeepwater drillships. The company's fleet operates worldwide, including the U.S. GoM, the U.K. and Norwegian sectors of the North Sea, the Middle East, and Trinidad.

Additionally, the company is a 50/50 partner in a joint venture with Saudi Aramco, entitled ARO Drilling, that owns a fleet of five self-elevating jackup rigs that operate in the Arabian Gulf.
