Specialist engineering has been completed by Wood Group on a subsea well control system, in the aftermath of a joint industry programme aimed at improving industry capabilities to respond to global well control incidents.
Wood Group Kenny has been involved with the international Subsea Well Response Project (SWRP)—which is supported by nine oil majors to improve well control response—along with other Wood Group subsidiaries Mustang and PSN since 2012, and they will continue to be involved until year-end 2014.
Engineering design of subsea equipment was provided by Wood Group Kenny, as well as design verification, well testing and topsides equipment plus the provision of guidelines for subsea well containment during a further engineering study. Mustang contributed topsides process design and managed the surface equipment package, as well as contributing to HSE-related aspects of the project using an ALARP (as low as reasonably practical) approach to risk.
Wood Group PSN used staff at its consultancy ODL to help define and map subsea well containment guidelines. Staff at the consultancy also co-ordinated technical development and review of documents, and provided technical authoring and support for electronic publishing.
The SWRP was set up by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers in 2011 to respond to events such as Macondo and Montara.
