Italy’s Eni drew a blank with a wildcat well on the Bonna prospect, the first deepwater probe in the Barents Sea.

The 7016/2-1 well failed to encounter reservoir rocks in the targeted Sotbakken formation after being drilled by semisubmersible Scarabeo 8 to a vertical depth of 4,025 m (13,206 ft) in 1,366 m (4,481 ft) of water, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD).

The well, drilled 185 km south-west of Statoil’s Snohvit gas field, was the first to be drilled in Eni’s production licence 529, awarded in the 20th licensing round. The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.

Eni holds a 30% stake as operator, with partners Dong, OMV and Wintershall each holding 20% and Repsol 10%.
The Scarabeo 8 will shortly proceed to production licence 229 in the Barents to drill production wells on the Goliat field, where Eni Norge AS is the operator.
