Chevron’s string of exploration successes continues off Western Australia, with its Elfin-1 probe in the Exmouth Plateau area hitting gas pay.

The discovery well in the Carnarvon basin encountered approximately 40 m (132 ft) of net gas pay in the upper Mungaroo sands, and is Chevron’s 21st discovery offshore Western Australia since mid-2009. Located in the WA-268-P permit area, the well is located approximately 170 km (106 miles) northwest of Barrow Island and was drilled in 1,088 m (3,570 ft) of water to a total depth of 3,630 m (11,909 ft), the company said.

Chevron Australia is the operator of WA-268-P with a 50% interest, while Shell Development Australia and Mobil Australia Resources each hold 25%.

Melody Meyer, president, Chevron Asia Pacific E&P Company, said, “This remarkable series of exploration discoveries in the Carnarvon Basin has created a robust gas portfolio in Australia. The growth of this portfolio positions the company to supply future LNG demand in the Asia Pacific region.”
