This issue marks the end of an era. Mark Thomas is bidding us adieu as editor in chief. His able replacement is already in harness, and we are looking forward to our second year of bringing you the best in news, analysis and technology updates from the global E&P scene. But before Mark sets sail, we want you to know how much he has meant to the success of Hart's E&P.
When we decided to merge Petroleum Engineer International, Euroil and Hart's Oil and Gas World, Mark was the natural choice as editor in chief. He brought great vision and drive to the project and literally devoted his every waking moment to making it a success. He integrated cutting-edge news from around the world with state-of-the art technology features and interviews with industry leaders, and marshaled our diverse and dispersed team of editors into producing cohesive, compelling editorial in five separate market areas. He made them sing together, in tune. At the same time, he played a major role in the design of the magazine and all its ancillary products.
We owe Mark an immense debt of gratitude for his tireless efforts to turn an idea into a powerful voice for the upstream oil and gas industry. In case you have been on Mars, we should point out that Mark accomplished this feat in the midst of one of the worst down cycles our industry has experienced. As his colleagues, we proudly raise our glasses to Mark and wish him well. Cheers, mate!
At the same time, we are excited to introduce Bill Pike as our new editor in chief. Bill's pedigree spans the spectrum of oilfield experience, from field hand to product-line manager. His journalistic experience is world-class. We are looking forward to witnessing the synergy that will take place when he combines these talents in the pages of Hart's E&P. Readers should notice Bill's strong hand on the technology tiller as our magazine enters its second year. Based in Houston, Bill will have his finger on the pulse of the exciting engine of innovation that is driving productivity and efficiency to new heights, and he will ensure that you read about it first here. Howdy, podner!
While we are saying farewell, we also want to acknowledge the wise counsel and steady hand of Ole Jacob Kvinnsland, chairman of our editorial board. Ole Jacob was with Hart's E&P at the drawing table and in the delivery room. Like his Viking ancestors, he helped us launch and navigate through the rough seas of our start-up, never losing sight of our star. He taught us to sing a famous toast in Norwegian (no small feat), and with great admiration and respect we toast him now. Takk, skoal!
Like any organization, a magazine is only as good as its people. And that includes our readers. In both groups, we have the best. Trade magazines have a high cost because they demand an investment of readers' valuable time. We must deliver real value every month to earn your readership and we do not take this responsibility lightly. As we acknowledge this changing of the guard, we pledge to carry on the fine tradition of Hart's E&P. Thank you for your loyalty.
