To the operators who wish to quantify and characterize all the fluids in their reservoirs, Inteq offers MagTrak, a new service based on magnetic resonance excitation of hydrogen. By adapting magnetic resonance technology from the benign medical setting to the downhole drilling environment, it is possible to easily measure fluid-filled porosity to a high degree of accuracy. The new device is environmentally friendly as it operates without a radiation source.
Magnetic resonance is already known to the oil exploration and production world, but this system was designed with the end-users in mind. It is tolerant to vibration and capable of acquiring quality data under normal drilling conditions and rates of penetration. It may even be run in a silent mode in the drill string. For the geologist and for the petrophysicist the new device is pre-programmed to facilitate job planning and real-time data delivery and interpretation while drilling. Because it measures the fluid-filled porosity and since it can differentiate between movable and non-movable fluids, the new service lifts a great deal of the uncertainty in reserve evaluation and reservoir description.
In recent field runs the tool has yielded data quality consistent with the most advanced wireline counterpart. When compared to nuclear porosity logs, the new service has given accurate direct readings of fluid-filled porosity with the added dimension of fluid mobility estimates.
