Caledyne has announced the qualification of its Torus safety valve, which achieved an API 14A class 1 certification for the 2 7/8-in. insert valve. According to the company, the valve opens new possibilities for enhancing production from mature fields. While the basic design stays the same, the new model provides a central conduit — hydraulic (mini-coil or capillary string), electrical or fiber-optic — to pass through the core of the valve. It allows the installation of artificial lift or downhole monitoring in existing wells without requiring a full workover. The company reported that during testing for API 14A qualification, the safety valve recorded zero leakage throughout the entire program. Typical applications aided by the new safety valve are liquid loading, removing scale buildup, injecting corrosion inhibitors, monitoring and real-time data acquisition and insert gas lifting.
