GE Oil & Gas (NYSE:GE) has invested more than £13.5million (US $20.5 million) across its subsea manufacturing facilities in Montrose, Scotland, in a move to enhance its business’s test and assembly (T&A) and manufacturing capabilities.
Construction of a 1,000 sq metre heat treat and cladding workshop has been completed, with structural work beginning on a new 600 sq metre administration block scheduled for completion in June 2015. GE has also finished a new high bay facility on another site, the result of a £2.6million ($4million) investment.
The high bay, which measures 40 m x 23 m, has been equipped with a 75-tonne capacity crane to accommodate larger subsea production systems common today. Six new pressure test bays have also been added along with a larger gas test pit.
Further to ongoing work at its other Montrose facility, the business purchased six new machine tools and doubled the number of cladding stations on-site. Cladding is a critical step in the manufacturing process, with the new equipment to help ensure GE is able to undertake the more complex cladding operations required for technologies destined for deepwater projects.
