Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) has released the GeoTech HE (high energy), a drillbit that incorporates new features and materials in an effort to deliver enhanced performance and increased reliability in today’s high energy drilling systems characterized by high weight-on-bit and drilling torque, the company said in a new release.
Advances in drilling equipment and practices have enabled operators to increase energy and drilling speed to reduce costs in recent years. As a result, Halliburton said drillbits experience higher forces that challenge traditional design theory and materials and increase risk of damage to the bit body material and API connection. The new drillbits are built to function in such conditions.
The matrix and steel platforms incorporate unique design geometries and features focused on high energy systems, Halliburton said. The new matrix body, made of an advanced alloy material, incorporates a blend of materials and the new steel body is machined from an advanced alloy material. Both are formulated for increased strength and durability under high torsional and axial loads.
Each bit begins with Halliburton’s Design at the Customer Interface Process, which deploys a global network of technical experts who engage with customers for optimization of bit design for a specific application. This process, Halliburton said, speeds development and eliminates the trial and error approaches that can be lengthy and expensive.
For an operator in the Williston Basin, GeoTech HE drillbits increased drilling speed and decreased the number of days to drill a lateral by 14%, Halliburton said in the release. The new technology reduced the occurrence of high energy bit damage resulting in zero failure rates to date.
