New York-based Petro River Oil Corp. said June 17 that drilling was completed at the Woodburn Forest-1 well in the Larne Basin, Northern Ireland.
The well was drilled to a depth of 2,000 meters and encountered two conventional porous sandstone reservoir intervals, the Triassic Sherwood and the Permian Collyhurst. The original goal was to reach the Carboniferous source rock at this depth; however, the Permian section thickened considerably and the Carboniferous was not reached.
The well was plugged and abandoned after the operation’s partners discussed the possibility of drilling deeper.
The presence of thermogenic gas in the Collyhurst section supports the original assessment of the existence of hydrocarbon source rock in the Carboniferous and a viable petroleum system, Petro River said.
