On May 22, Third Energy submitted a planning application to North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) to hydraulically stimulate and test geological formations at Well KM8 at the Kirby Misperton area. Operations director John Dewar said the area could produce natural gas from the Bowland strata underneath North Yorkshire, U.K.
If the tests are successful, oil and gas will be produced from one or more of the formations. The resources will be used to generate electricity, the U.K.-based natural gas appraisal company said.
The proposed development will involve pre-stimulation workover, hydraulic fracture stimulation and well test, production test, production and site restoration.
The formations’ prospective nature was identified when Well KM8 was drilled in 2013 and well data was analyzed.
Third Energy also applied to the Environment Agency for necessary permits, which include a custom mining waste operation permit and a nonhazardous mining waste facility, a custom radioactive substances permit and a custom groundwater activity permit.
Third Energy has worked in North Yorkshire for 20 years, Dewar added.
Once the application has been validated by NYCC, the documents will be available on the planning section of NYCC’s website.
